Wedding of the Year!

Not too long ago, we received a wedding invite from no less than our good friends Divina and Ricky. Ever since I got married (not too long ago either), I've never looked at wedding invitations the same way I do now. Unknown to most people who've never gone through a wedding preparation, the effort that goes into the seemingly mundane task of choosing an invite, is so much that it can take days and even months for some to pick out the perfect wedding invite. Some even go to the extreme of making their own home-made invite. It is almost rude not to read or even just take a peek at this work of art. Yes I was guilty of the same sin of putting them away and would even call the couple on the day itself asking for directions to the church!

So when we opened Divina and Ricky's invitation, Angel and I took our time and sat down to scrutinize and admire how it was put together. The turquoise color really matches the couple's bubbly and outgoing personalities. It also is very apt as the wedding will be held in the beautiful island of Boracay. It doesn't have a whole lot of inserts making it easy to find the information you need. I also like simplicity of the logo's fonts. Well done, Divina and Ricky! As you're both in the homestretch of your wedding prep, take it easy and have fun!

Alicia + Carlos Wedding

She thought nothing of his plans to spend the weekend at the beautiful Ritz Carlton in Dana Point. It was her birthday after all. "Surely he is just being his sweet self making big plans for my birthday", she thought. They started out with a romantic dinner and some wine. They proceeded to stroll around the hotel grounds enjoying the spectacular view of the pacific. As they headed back to the hotel, they chanced upon a piano in the hotel's lobby. Carlos sat down and started playing to the tune of "Growing Old with You". Though smitten by this romantic gesture, she thought to herself: "he should just play this when he proposes to me..". They then went back to their room but as she opened the door, she saw scattered petals leading up to the table with a small box on top. He opened the box and knelt down. Before he could even say a word, tears started running down her face. Almost a year ago, on Alicia's birthday, Carlos professed his love for Alicia and asked her to marry him. The response of course, was a resounding YES!!!

This is our first wedding shoot at the Wayfarer's Chapel. We were thrilled when we found out the venue of the ceremony. We've always wanted to shoot a wedding here. Designed by Lloyd Wright, son of the prominent architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Chapel's unique design has also made it a must-see in Southern California.

Like I mentioned in the sneak preview, these two have got to be the goofiest couple we've shot so far - making for some cool and relaxed photos. Thank you both for allowing us to be a part of your wedding. Your families have also been more than accommodating. The best of luck to you both.

Alicia + Carlos Sneak Peek

Our apologies for not having blogged in quite a while. Just like that we're already in the middle of September and so much has happened since our last post not least of which was Alicia and Carlos' wedding last weekend at the beautiful Wayfarer's Chapel in Palos Verdes. It should be worth noting that these two are the goofiest we've shot so far which of course made for an easier photo shoot. Please check back in the coming days for the slideshow. Maria + Sam Slideshow

One of the greatest rewards of wedding photography is being able to build relationships with your clients. Maria and Sam's wedding was no exception. Being there for practically the entire event, we actually became friends with them and their families and some guests by the time the reception ended. This for me makes wedding photography such a fun experience.

It deserves to be mentioned again how beautiful and radiant Maria was in her white wedding dress and long veil. She looked simple yet elegant and classic. It was no surprise to see the joy in Sam's face when she walked down the aisle. Of course, Sam looked real fine himself in his stylish tux. The ceremony was one of the most solemn ones I have ever seen. Though St. John Neumann is known to have one of the stricter photography and videography guidelines, we managed to capture some nice photos of not the couple's backs =).

We had a grand time shooting the reception as well at The Hacienda in Santa Ana. The place had limitless details - a joy to any photographer. Seriously, the facade looks like the well-known Santuario de Chimayo in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Maria + Sam Preview

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of shooting Maria and Sam's wedding at the St. John Neumann Church in Irvine. The ceremony, attended by Maria and Sam's close family and friends, was nice and solemn. Maria was radiant in her long veil and elegant wedding dress. Sam looked dashing in his 2-button black tux. The beautiful Calla Lily Bouquets and boutonnieres were provided by Floral Etiquette.

Reception was held at the The Hacienda Tivoli Terrace in Santa Ana. DJ and Music was provided by Your Special Night Entertainment.

Here's one of my favorites. The rustic door reminds me of photos of Santa Fe in New Mexico.

Cherrie + Nicco Slideshow

Cherrie and Nicco's is the first destination wedding for BlueLights so we were naturally very excited. We flew in Friday night and did their engagement session early Saturday morning. Lighting was perfect and of course the resort was just gorgeous - postcard gorgeous. It was hard not to feel the love that this couple have for one another.

Sunday was the BIG day. The intricate details alone were already a joy to shoot. Cherrie was stunning and glowing while Nicco was dapper himself in a barong tagalog. The nice purple motif really stood out in the photos. It was easy to take lovely photos of this lovely couple.

To Cherrie and Nicco, a million thanks to you both and your respective families. It was a blast shooting your wedding and we're honored that we did. Meredith and Wayne Flashback

Just worked on this slideshow a couple of days ago. This is one of the first few weddings that we did. We didn't have an online slideshow software back then and when we did, we never got around to making one for them. This is one of the favorite weddings that we covered for several reasons. First, the venue, Tivoli Terrace had great lighting even at noontime. The place also has a rustic feel to it paired with the beautiful color motif. Lastly, the couple Meredith and Wayne were such great sports that despite a long day at the wedding, they still mustered enough energy to pose for some really cool photos at the beach after the reception. All of these made for really nice photos. Today, they have an adorable boy Noah who's the tallest 18 month old baby I know.

17 Months

This post digresses from the wedding, engagement or portraits that you would normally see here. This is more of a personal posting not of me but of our little one Rafael who just turned 17 months a few days ago. It sure has been a wild ride for myself and Angel, being first-time parents. We try to look out for every milestone and as much as we can, document little things that he does out of the ordinary. It's easy to miss seeing him grow up when other things start to occupy our time.

Just recently, we've started the habit of taking him out to the playground after we get home from work just to free him from the constricting walls of our home. The way his eyes brighten up when he's outdoors, is just priceless. We have our camera(s) handy most of the time but he's at an age where sitting still is not an option. He runs around like a crazed cat that taking a photo of him is not easy. Below are some that I caught of him yesterday at the playground. I've recently renewed my interest in using the 50mm (a loaner from Ricky) shot wide open.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to capture my first official family photo. I met Gretchen at a previous wedding we did and approached me if I can help her fix her Nikon flash, to no avail. Nevertheless, she called me the week after and asked me if I could do a family pictorial by the beach. I agreed, but on the day of the shoot, it was the weekend when CA had the one of the biggest swells i have ever seen. Our original beach location was closed due to flooding. So last minute we had to re-locate and good thing it was close to the ever reliable "favorite spot" Montage Hotel at Laguna Beach. We had a blast with Zachary their 1 and half year old son. This assignment was so different to shooting a wedding where you can direct the subject on how to pose. On this occasion it was Zachary directing me. Thanks Gretchen and Tony for trusting me to capture their last family portrait in California. Good luck with your move to beautiful Colorado!

Divina and Ricky Engagement

They met in Australia where Ricky flew from the Philippines as part of a Singles for Christ (SFC) Mission while she was herself a SFC Leader in Sydney. At first, their relationship was nothing more than that of a "brother" and "sister" in SFC-speak. Not too long after however, they exchanged emails and their friendship soon blossomed into something deeper. Knowing fully well the challenges of a long distance relationship, they both took the risk and decided to pursue their relationship. As if Manila is not far enough from Sydney, the distance even got farther when Ricky moved here in the States. Not to be denied, they persevered and was rewarded by circumstances allowing Divina to find a job here in Orange County. Last September, on a Cruise to Mexico, Ricky professed his love for Divina and asked her to marry him. The risk they took clearly paid off and they are set to wed on January, 2010 in the beautiful island of Boracay.

Congratulations and we're really happy for you both! You're truly role models to couples out there who because of circumstances, are separated by distance in their relationships.

Last Sunday, I had the great opportunity to do an engagement shoot of a couple that I've known for quite sometime now. If there is a client that you want to do a really good engagement shoot of, it's these two. It's because Ricky is a photographer himself - one of the partners of BlueLights.

Gloria and Pete's Golden Wedding Anniversary

Before I met Tito Pete, Tita Gloria and the Francisco siblings, I was quite bummed that I got voted out of the Cancun wedding shoot (via Allan's double-sided coin =)) of which I chose heads. Little did I know that I was going to be in on one of the most enjoyable wedding shoots.

Right when I walked into the Francisco home, I met Robert, wife Kerry and their adorable daughter Sophia, and immediately felt at ease. I then met the entire family including Tito Pete and Tita Gloria and their eldest daughter Teresa. After the meeting, I wanted to shoot this wedding sooo badly as wedding anniversaries especially the 50th have to be one of the most special events that could happen in a family and the thought of somehow being witness to it is just plain awesome! So when Teresa emailed me asking that I send her the contract, I was ecstatic. Though it would've been great shooting it with my BlueLights partners, I had two very able 2nd and 3rd shooters in Angel and Christopher! I can't imagine shooting this one without them!

Tito Pete and Tita Gloria, we feel so blessed to be your photographers. Thank you so much for the hospitality. We seriously feel like a part of your extended family! You still owe us the secret to your successful marriage!

Manille Bakery's Beverly Hills Launch

I was invited by my friend Petal to cover the launching of Manille Bakery in Beverly Hills. It was so hard to take pictures because i wanted to try everything that was there. Everything tasted really really good (i think i must have gained 10lbs after the party). Kudos to Petal and Raymond for a great launch!! Looking forward to working with you guys again in the future. By the way....they do great wedding cakes as well!!!

Marou + Johndee Slideshow

Here it is finally. The long overdue slideshow of Marou and Johndee's wedding. They tied the knot back in November at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Irvine. Marou was stunning in her beautiful beaded white wedding dress and long veil while Johndee dazzled in his barong tagalog especially hand-loomed from pineapple leaf fibers.

Reception was held at the Marriott, also in Irvine. There were several presentations prepared by close family and friends which made the evening even more special. Afterwards, guests danced the night away to the music provided by the talented Annapolis band.

Test-driving the P & S at Clare and Elmer's Wedding

After days of waiting, I finally received my christmas present for myself - a point & shoot camera. I have searched for months for the right P & S to get for the times when I don't want to be lugging around a heavy gear and finally settled with a Canon P & S.

Yesterday we attended Clare and Elmer's wedding at the beautiful Immaculata Church inside the University of San Diego campus and it was the perfect time to test-drive my new toy and see how it would perform (not that I expected it to perform anywhere near my DSLR). Just as expected, beyond ISO 200, photos are unacceptably noisy. I thought of mounting a flash but knew it was going be top-heavy and defeated the purpose of just having a pocket camera with me. Anyway, I thought it performed really well outdoor and it's 28mm equivalent lens was perfect for architectural and landscape shots.

TS Lens

Sometimes even when you know there are more pressing matters to attend to, you always find a way to do the more mundane things instead. Last night, instead of spending my time filing stuff, I decided to toy around with ImageReady. I wanted to get the Tilt-shift lens effect. I've seen a lof of really interesting photos taken with TS Lenses. One of these days I'm gonna get myself one of 'em lensbaby but for now, PP will have to do. I'm sure to all of you PS Gurus out there, you could do this with your eyes shut but t'was quite an accomplishment for me - better than filing I guess..

San Francisco

We go to San Francisco at least twice a year. We never get tired of seeing this beautiful city. Whenever we leave, we always wish we have more time to explore the city and its suburbs. Our trips have always been about visiting family so a long weekend is usually not enough. This Christmas trip however, we were fortunate enough to get some unexpected free afternoon so we decided to spend it strolling the Embarcadero on the side of Pier 1. This side of the Embarcadero is least frequented by tourists but is equally scenic and has a quaint feel to it. We got up to the very end of Pier One almost directly underneath the Bay Bridge but just as we started clicking away, we realized the parking meter where we parked was about to expire and it was quite a walk from where we were. We knew, it didn't matter if it was a day after Christmas, we were either gonna get a ticket or get towed. Half-running and half-walking, we rushed for a good 10 minutes and luckily, the car was still there and nothing on the windshield. Whew! The distance (literally) you would go to just to get good photos!

We've known this couple for quite some time now and we're glad not only to be entrusted upon to capture their special day but also to witness their union. It was hard to miss even the smallest detail in the wedding. From the wedding invites to the missalettes to the souvenirs and the flowers by Floral Etiquette, were just absolutely gorgeous! One of the reasons why wedding photography is fun and exciting is because each wedding is different. Melissa and Neil's wedding is our first ever Military wedding. Melissa was lovely in her cream gown while Neil looked sharp in his Marine Corps Blue Dress uniform. They were married at the beautiful Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in Los Angeles. Following the ceremony, the couple was greeted by the Arch of Sabres by Neil's fellow U.S. Marines as they exited the church doors. This alone made for quite a unique wedding.

Their reception was held at the historic Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga Canyon. For those of you who don't know, The Inn used to be Topanga's first church, a Four Square Gospel Church.

I remember meeting Melissa and Neil in Starbucks, because we waited for them for 3 hours hahaha...sorry Neil and Melissa=). But as soon as we met them we felt so at ease with them. Next thing you know they were asking us to whom do we make the check to?=) hahah.!! We could not believe they wanted to pay us even without signing the contract yet. As an FYI they were the very first one we booked this year and the second to the last wedding we did for the year 2008.

To Melissa and Neil...Thank you so much for trusting us and making us wait for 3 hours!! it was all worth it!!!!=)

About Us

For months, we've talked about shooting a photo of the 3 of us to put in the About Us section of our website. As things began picking up (both in our personal and professional lives), we never got around to doing it as it wasn't easy to arrange our schedules to meet at Allan's home studio. We decided to just do it during the last wedding that we covered since we were all dressed up for the occassion already anyway.

A couple of weeks back, we received this meticulously-made invite for Marou and Johndee's fall wedding. They are tying the knot on the 22nd of this month. We're really excited to shoot their wedding with our very own Ricky as part of the entourage. We promise to give a groomsman's perspective of the ceremony.

As I was sifting through the tons of photos we took at this wedding, I couldn't help but notice the happiness in Shiela and Inaki's faces. This is what makes wedding photography such a fulfilling job or should I say adventure for us. It is such a joyous occassion that you actually go home feeling romantic and pleasant. How many jobs can make you feel that way?

Being a noontime reception, lighting was a bit of a challenge. Like a blessing in disguise, the location shoot had been postponed for later in the afternoon. This made for a nice and relaxed photoshoot at the Old Ranch golf course. As usual, Shiela and Inaki were up for anything.

Working with familiar videographers made our jobs easier as well. The team of Joel Crelencia and Noel Guinto was a breeze to work with.

To the couple, thank you for putting your trust in us to photograph your special day!

Day in the life of a Photographer

Last sunday i got up really really early to cover the Long Beach Marathon. So i thought...this is the life of a photographer, a lot of waiting and freezing your $^# off.
I was hired by the company (Brightroom.com)that covers big sports events accross the nation..and was lucky to be chosen as one of their photogs. Of course i miss my 2 partners from bluelights..i normally shoot with them, now i was working with other photographers from different backgrounds and expertise. It was a very tiring day carrying my huge lens...i should have listened to the team lead, should have purchased that monopod at walmart to use just for the day!!! But waking up and having a sore back was worth it!!! - Ricky

Alva + Mark Slideshow - Costa Mesa / Orange CA

Coming up with a slideshow of a wedding or an engagement session is always exciting. Each one has its own character that separates it from all the other events we do. Yet one thing they all share is the feeling of excitement, delight, and elation all in one day. Watching the slideshow reminds us of the wedding day itself. The emotions we felt and emotions we saw Alva and Mark (and their guests) felt inspired us when we made this slideshow.

So after days of going back and forth, editing and correcting, Alva and Mark's slideshow is finally posted on this link. Proofs will follow in the coming days as we are limited by the upload speed of our vendor.

It was also great working with Party Perks Flowers, Studio West Video and Primo DJs. I'm sure we'll bump into each other again one of these days.

Double Wedding - Arnold + Winnie and Ken + Jerry - Fullerton, CA

I assisted a friend in photographing a double wedding last weekend. Except for the 2 couples kneeling in front of the priest, everything else is the same.

Most churches prohibit photographers from going past the first pew from the altar. This specific church however was more tolerant as we were allowed to shoot close to the altar giving us a good view of the 2 couples saying their vows. I'm honored to have been asked to be the second shooter. Thank you Ricky DG!

We were so looking forward to shooting Michelle and Elvin's wedding. We had a blast doing their engagement session back in May that we couldn't wait to go back to shoot the actual wedding. This couple is no stranger to us, so warming up for their photo shoot didn't take long. We decided to try a few new things during this session so we were glad they were up to it. E-sessions typically last for only 2 hours max but this time, it took us 4. It was well worth every minute though as we also got to know more about this lovely couple - another reason why we encourage couples to have an e-session. Here is a link to their slideshow.

Welcome to our blog! This year so many things have happened that it would be a waste to just let these events pass us by without documenting them. So we thought of starting this blog to chronicle our journey into the exciting world of wedding photography!

Not too long ago, 3 friends, guided by our passion for photography decided to venture into the wedding photography business. None of us had any idea what we were up against (I can't say we do now either). No business plan, no market research, nothing. A year and a half later, here we are actually setting our plans in motion. Just a few months ago, in July, we launched our website, learned an improved workflow and finally registered our business name. Now isn't this a truly exciting year for BlueLights!
